As the tabletop gaming industry has grown in recent years, dice making has become an ever-more-popular business for creators both big and small. With thousands upon thousands of options across aesthetics, genres, materials, colors, and shapes, it's true that most players's dice needs can be satisfied by one of the many pre-made sets on the market.

But occasionally, the discerning tabletop gamer seeks something so unique and specific that their only option is to commission a 100% original dice creation directly from the makers themselves. Here, we've collected a list of custom dice makers and their individual offerings to help these players along on their journey to manifest their dice dreams.

D&D Den: Individually-sold gemstone D20s

A selection of example D20s from D&D Den

The folks at D&D Den offer beautiful custom gemstone D20s, sold individually (no order minimum). Buyers can choose to customize one or the other of the "natural" die faces (1 or 20), which can be replaced by a monogram or an uploaded design. D&D Den offers 25 different gemstone color varieties, and while these D20s aren't sold as sets, the matching 7-die sets are available from the general dice shop.

Price: $69.99

Materials: Gemstone

Color choices: 25

Customize: Single die face (1 or 20)

Printed or engraved: Engraved

Doldols: Custom gemstone D20s at an affordable price point

For those who are a bit more cost-conscious, Doldols offers a similar custom gemstone D20 at a much more affordable entry price. Buyers can choose from a range of seven gemstone materials and can design both the 1 and the 20 faces of their custom D20. Prices start at $29.95 and vary depending on the value of the chosen gemstone material. It's unclear what, exactly, allows Doldols to offer their wares at such a discount, so we make this recommendation with the gentle warning that you may find you get what you pay for. (Or maybe they're great! If you buy one, let us know how it goes.)

Price: $29.95+

Materials: Gemstone

Color choices: 7

Customize: Two "nat" die faces (1 or 20)

Printed or engraved: Engraved

DnD Dice: Custom bulk-order D20s with a matching dice set option

If you want to buy a complete set along with your custom D20, major dice retailer DnD Dice may be your best bet. Custom D20s can be purchased alone or alongside a matching set, and come in five distinct colorways (the sixth is available without the matching set option). Buyers can choose from two sizes (25mm and 34mm) and can select the color used to paint the engraved numbers on their dice.

This option does have a 25-item order minimum for custom D20s, and buyers need to contact the company for a price quote.

Materials: Acrylic

Color choices: 5 with matching sets; a 6th option is available for D20s only

Customize: Two "nat" die faces (1 or 20)

DiceWench: 100% customizable resin dice

A selection of custom dice offered by DiceWench

If you're looking for truly customizable dice — dice whose colors, encased items, and faces can be made to order — Etsy seller DiceWench has what you seek. The indie creator offers custom resin sets in standard and jumbo sizes for $90 and $110, respectively (add $5 to either for encased inserts). She also notes that she can 3D print custom inserts for dice so long as buyers provide the object files, which is a level of personalization that few other sellers can offer.

Price: $90 for standard, $110 for jumbo; add $5 for encased inserts

Materials: Resin

Color choices: Many

Customize: Resin colors, inserts, and all dice faces

Printed or engraved: Engraved

PolyhedronPalace: Custom resin dice with optional liquid cores

Abigail Johnson, known on Etsy as PolyhedronPalace, offers many (but not all) of the same customization options as DiceWench for the very reasonable starting price of $55. While buyers can't request a custom 3D-printed encased insert, they can request same-color liquid cores for just $5, and varying-color cores for $10. Johnson doesn't explicitly say that die faces are customizable, but given the level of customization offered across all other factors, we'd say it's a fair bet — and certainly worth asking, if that's what you're in the market for. Orders also come with some room for error: included in the price are a work-up of the buyer's order and one free recast, with additional recasts priced at $5 each.

Price: $55+

Materials: Resin

Color choices: Many

Customize: Resin colors, inserts, and liquid cores

Printed or engraved: Engraved

Board Games Maker: Custom dice creations for indie gamemakers

A custom polyhedral die from Board Game Makers

Board Games Maker is a full-service manufacturer of custom games, from individual game pieces and cards to original game boxes. Their custom dice offerings, therefore, are more in line with what you might need as an indie game creator than a personalized set for your TTRPG. But there are no order minimums, so you can design custom sets for any purpose you choose. Buyers can design their own color-printed polyhedral dice sets with completely custom die faces, while engraved options are limited to D6s and can be created using any vector image on each face. The dice are sold individually and cost between $3 and $12.50 each, but the per-item price decreases at higher purchase quantities.

Price: Roughly $3-$12.50 per individual die

Materials: Acrylic or wood

Color choices: Available for D6s only; choose from 6 colors or wood

Customize: All dice faces

Printed or engraved: Printed polyhedral dice; engraved D6s
